James Herrick Obituary

James "Jim" Herrick

James "Jim" Herrick of Perrysburg, OH passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 10, 2018. He was born in Toledo on November 25, 1949 to the union of Calvin and Mildred (Ball), deceased. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Sherry (Holas), cherished daughter, Tania Schneider (Jason) and grandchildren, Mia, Caitlin and Deven. Jim's family was always first, each and every day.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Navy (1969-1973) and proudly served four tours of duty in Vietnam. He received his GED while in the Navy and went on to Owens Tech and graduated the Ohio Peace Officer Academy. After college, Jim was employed five years as a Deputy Sheriff for Lucas County. He then was hired by the Department of Justice, Bureau of Prisons in Milan MI, transferring to Atlanta Penitentiary in 1985 and retiring in August 2003. To quote a past coworker who recently commented about Jim, "at Atlanta Penitentiary he was courageous and walked tall. He wasn't shy or timid. He genuinely cared for the officers he worked with."

In Atlanta, Jim was President of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at St. John the Evangelist Church. He also volunteered as Youth Coordinator with the high school age parish members.

Jim had special qualities. He was gentle, tough and made sure you knew where he stood on various issues. He also leaves behind a sister, two brothers, many nieces and nephews.

In accordance with Jim's wishes, there will be no Mass or memorial. Donations may be made in his name to Wounded Warrior or Organ Donation of Ohio. Jim would have urged you to be an organ donor.
