Norman V. Kay

Norman Kay passed away on May 7, 2017 in Walnut Creek, CA. He was born in Toledo, along with twin sister, Barbara, to Valentine and Mary Ann (Kulczak) Kwiatkowski on September 27, 1930. Norm graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1948 and the University of Toledo in 1953 with a degree in Accounting and Marketing. He was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity. Norm enjoyed sports: bowling, golf, and skiing and was a member of The Ski Club. His career began with Kaiser Jeep at Willis Motor in the accounting department in Toledo. In 1964, he met Mary Ann Dunlap at a party, and when
he transferred to the Kaiser Center in Oakland, California, he asked Mary Ann to marry him. They wed in San Francisco, with their friend, Bill Pierson as best man. They honeymooned in Hawaii and upon their return, briefly stayed with Bill in Oakland before moving to Morgan, California with daughter, Christine. In 1966, the family permanently moved to Walnut Creek, CA. Norm, in the International Department, traveled to South America, South Africa, Brazil and Argentina. In 1967, Mary Ann’s brother, Charles Dunlap was killed in an auto accident in Los Angeles, where he was living. Mary Ann’s mother Kathryn joined the family when she became ill. When Kaiser Jeep was sold to American Motors in 1970, Norm turned down a transfer to Detroit and joined Kaiser Cement until his retirement in 1988 as Assistant Controller. Through the years, Norm and Mary Ann went on 5 cruises, plus trips to England, Scotland, Wales, Switzerland, and Italy. They had 3 Lawrence Welk Time Shares in San Diego, using and exchanging them for various locations. They visited Texas, Arizona, Ohio and Florida for weddings, vacations and reunions. They lost mothers, fathers, broth
ers and tragically Christine. After an early retirement in 1988, Norm joined Sons in Retirement, Branch 116, enjoying golf and new friends. Norm was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Walnut Creek, serving as Assistant Treasurer for many years. He also helped with food at the homeless shelter. He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; twin sister, Barbara Kaczanowski; sister, Beverly Walczak; nieces, Karen Caventer, Debbie (Dan) Marshall, Kelly (Drew) Wood, Kate Caventer, Kelsey Walczak, Gracie Marshall, Tabitha Wood and Avery Walczak; nephews, Allan (Mary) Walczak, Brandon (Lauren) Walczak, Bryan (Ashley) Walczak and Scott Wood. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Christine; parents; brother, Tom; brothers-in-law, Dick Kaczanowski and Dick Walczak; and nephew, Scott Caventer. Services were held in Walnut Creek, CA. Interment services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday May 20, 2017 in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
