Welcome to the memorial page for

Sister M. Ramona Wolcenski OSF

December 2, 1930 ~ November 6, 2017 (age 86) 86 Years Old

Sister M. Ramona Wolcenski died on November 6, 2017, at Flower Hospital in Sylvania, Ohio. Sister Ramona, the daughter of Joseph and Josephine Wolcenski, entered the convent from St. Philip Parish in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1945. She made her First Profession of religious vows in 1950 and her final vows in 1953.

Sister Ramona spent the majority of her 67 years of religious life teaching primary grade children in Ohio, Minnesota and Louisiana schools. She held B.A., B.S.E. and M.A. degrees from the former Mary Manse College in Toledo, Ohio. She began teaching in Toledo, moved on to her home state of Minnesota where she taught for 14 years and completed her teaching ministry after 36 years in New Orleans. She and her sister, Sister Ann Joachim, gave incredible witness to the people of that city throughout the Hurricane Katrina tragedy. They ministered to their beloved people, especially the children in New Orleans, which became near and dear to the two Sylvania Franciscan Sisters. The "Sister-sisters" returned to the Motherhouse in Sylvania where they continued ministry by helping the Sisters in Rosary Care Center during the renovation project and visiting several Sisters on a daily basis.

Sister Ramona will be dearly missed by her sister, Sister Ann Joachim; and the Sisters in her religious community; along with her nephew, Jim Maciasek; other nephews and nieces; as well as her many friends in New Orleans. This "highly organized, great cook, best primary teacher and best sister ever" has left her legacy in the hearts and lives of many students, Sisters and friends. "How lucky [we are] to have [someone] that makes saying goodbye so hard." (Winnie the Pooh)

There will be a Welcoming Service for Sister Ramona in Our Lady Queen of Peace Chapel at the Motherhouse of the Sisters of St. Francis in Sylvania at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, November 13, 2017, followed by visitation until 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 beginning at 9:00 a.m. until the funeral liturgy at 4:00 p.m. Interment will be at Porta Coeli Cemetery on the campus of the Sisters. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of St. Francis, Sylvania, Ohio.
