Donald Okun Obituary

Donald T. Okun

Donald T. Okun 90, died peacefully surrounded by his family at home on Thursday November 15, 2018. Don was born on July 6, 1928 to Ida and Max Okun, of Toledo Ohio. Don was a graduate of Scott High School and following his service in the US Navy, attended The Ohio State University. Throughout his entire life, Don was a loyal Buckeye fan, supporting The Ohio State Buckeyes, rarely ever missing a football game on TV...and was ecstatic whenever he attended a game. Don's grandchildren presented him with one of his favored gifts of all time, a personalized brick placed at OSU's famed Horseshoe Football stadium, honoring Don and Marcia's 50th Wedding Anniversary. Don was also a member of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity throughout his years at college and was active and responsible for planning many reunions for his fraternity brothers over the last 60 years.

In 1954 he married the former Marcia Zimmerman and together they had 64 beautiful years of blissful married life.

After college, Don joined his father in the family produce company (founded by his grandfather Sam Okun); Don succeeded his father Max Okun as President of The Sam Okun Produce Company, were he remained until he retired in 1992.

Don was a member of many local clubs including The Toledo Country Club, The Toledo Club and Glengarry Country Club; Don was also a lifelong member of Temple Shomer Emunim. Following in the footsteps of his father in law Phil Zimmerman, Don was also an active lifetime member of the Old Newsboys Association.

Once retired, Don and his wife Marcia moved full time to life in Southern Florida, building a home in Palm Beach Gardens. An avid athlete, Don excelled at golf and tennis, winning a number of championship golf tournaments throughout the years, and was especially proud of his 4 "Holes in One." Don was also an expert bridge player, achieving "Life Master" status early on and competing at tournaments throughout Southern Florida, playing on behalf of BallenIsles Country Club A Team.

His still growing family was the focus and center of his life. Don is survived by his loving and devoted wife Marcia, his children Laurie and Neil Bornstein and Sam Okun; four grandchildren, Xander Max Okun, Randi Born (Jordan), Lindsay Kaplan (Jamie) and Jacki Block (Sam) as well as six great grandchildren; his two brothers, Fred Okun (JoAnn), Larry Okun (Marcy); and sister-in-law Adair Silverman.

His daughter Laurie Bornstein commented "Dad so deserved the longevity he was blessed with – He was the kind of guy everybody liked, the kind of man people always gravitated towards and wanted to be with, everywhere he went; he had a great life!"

Don's family wishes to acknowledge the loving care he received from his physician, Dr. Robert Axonovitz, along with the kind and caring Promedica hospice staff.

In leu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Temple Shomer Emunim, The Old Newsboys Association, or a charity of the donor's choice.
