Joan Swartzberg passed away, peacefully and at the age of 95, in Tucson, Arizona where she had been living since 2012. She was the widow of Ted Swartzberg, who preceded her in death in 1991, shortly after their 50th wedding anniversary. She was the co-owner, with her husband, of the BaskinRobbins Ice Cream store on Monroe and Talmadge Roads in Toledo, which they established in 1966 and operated successfully for 20 years. Joan grew the ice cream cake decorating business, along with ice cream pies and specialty desserts, into one of the most successful Baskin-Robbins franchises in the country. Joan and Ted developed a wholesale business with Gladieux Catering, providing ice cream rosettes and other treats for weddings, receptions, and special events. Additionally, they developed specialty ice cream pies for local country clubs and restaurants, which offered her wonderful creations to their membership and customers. One of the most rewarding aspects of their business was hiring and mentoring local area high school students, where this was the
first job they ever held. To see many of these students become lawyers, doctors and become successful in their respective careers was very gratifying to Joan and Ted. Along with her husband, Ted, Joan was preceded in death by her brothers Millard, Leonard and Joseph Eisler, and her sisters Virginia Kaufman Maltz, Sylvia Manoff and Charlotte Marenberg. She is survived by her son, Barry (Mary Jo Bellner) Swartzberg and her daughter, Rhoda Michelle Matic (Dan). In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Ted Swartzberg and Paul Bellner Scholarship Fund at The University of Toledo Foundation (2801 West Bancroft Street, Mail Stop 318, Toledo, OH 43606), to benefit Eagle Scouts/Boy Scouts (within The Erie Shores Council District) who demonstrate a financial need. Ted was active in the Boy Scouts, Troop 37, of Collingwood Avenue Temple, where he was an Eagle Scout and Scoutmaster. Funeral services will be held Friday, September 1st at 10 a.m. at the Robert H. Wick Funeral Home, 2426 N. Reynolds Road. Interment will immediately follow funeral services at Beth Shalom Cemetery in Oregon, OH. A lunch will be held at Temple Shomer Emunim, 6453 Sylvania Avenue after interment for family and friends. The family will also receive guests Saturday evening at the Temple Shomer Emunim from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
