John E. Thor
John E. Thor, age 48 of Sylvania, OH died on April 30, 2018. Born in Toledo, the son of Stanley E. Thor and Mary Ann Pietras Thor. He was a 1988 graduate of St. Francis de Sales High School and earned his Master's Degree in Education from the University of Toledo in 2001. Prior to UT, John attended Ohio State Universityfor two years. John taught special education at Southview High School for more than 20 years, where he was loved by staff and students as well as families. He once said, "I truly feel the level of students and teachers here at Southview is outstanding. Through experience, I have seen there are a lot of students and teachers who really care about education." He truly believed in education and helping students and families as well. A student said, "Anyone who sees him working with these students can tell he is actually helping them with their problems, he just seems to understand their needs." He was quick to volunteer to be involved in more than just education and led the Strive program in Sylvania Schools. It was his honor to nominate and advocate for students both educationally as well as personally.
John was an adjunct professor with Owens Community College where Southview students attending OCC continued their affinity and appreciation for his wit and teaching style. He often heard from his students who took his classes because of his reputation of being an instructor who could make difficult concepts simple. As for his personal style, in short, he was entertaining and an effective leader in and out of the classroom. Many of his students would take subsequent courses because they appreciated him. He could not go into public without running into a colleague, student or family member who touched his life. He was fun loving, down to earth, concerned and focused on helping others to be successful in their education, both in the high school and collegiate arenas.
As a father, John would never fail to make his children laugh and smile. He coached both of his sons through the Sylvania Rec Baseball Program; his fellow coaches, parents and players loved him and appreciated his enthusiasm. As with teaching, often players would request him as their coach.
He was a Cleveland Indians and Ohio State fan, and he loved taking his family to their games. John would do anything for his family, especially his children. He was known to go the extra mile without hesitation.
He also helped around the community in many ways and often went above and beyond taking pride in doing as much as he could, he strived for excellence. He will be dearly missed as a happy and fun-loving guy. Grieving hard are his loving Aunt Cc and Uncle Pete, he will be dearly missed by them.
Preceding him in death was his father Stanley. Surviving are his wife, Jaimie; children, Kael, Saige, and Logan; mother, Mary Ann Thor; brother, Charles Thor and nieces and nephews.
