I have been piecing together my earliest memories of Sue. I remember times in Hungary when she would call out to our Mom to let her know that I was getting into trouble- which was probably often. I recall her excitement when my parents had her piano delivered from Budapest to our home in Miskolc, and her endless practicing. I recall my daily walks with our Mom to pick Sue from school, and train rides together to Budapest to visit our grandparents. Sue would only want to sit in the dining car of the train, so our parents had to constantly order food so we could keep sitting in that car.

There was also the time Sue helped a woman with asthma cross the border into Austria when we escaped from Hungary in 1956, but that was Sue—always stepping-up to help. Sue was active in various organizations and always managed to find the good in people.

We were close brother and sister in a strange place with a strange language during our early years in Toledo. She took care of me many evenings when our parents attended classes after work to learn English. We drifted apart in our teens, and even more so after I left for college in 1969, as our lives moved in different directions. I was happy that she had close friends in Toledo, elated that she found such a good guy as Joe for her husband, and grateful that she and Joe were able to assist our parents in their later life.

Sue and I were frequently on the phone with each other, and I treasure the times she and Joe were able to visit in person. I only regret the visits were infrequent and short.

Regardless of the distances and differences, Sue was always my sister. I loved her, and will miss her.
