Bernard J. Leite

Bernard J. Leite, 86, long time Toledo resident, passed peacefully from his Earthly life on Saturday, August 20, 2022. He is survived by his three daughters, Julie Franczek (Vince) of Hinckley, Ohio, Janet Miller (Rod) of Perrysburg, Ohio and Carol Helm (Chris) of Centerville, Ohio. Also surviving is a brother, Dr. John C. Leite; and thirteen grandchildren, Meghan, Zachary, Benjamin, Matthew and Christian Franczek, Alexandra Miller Trame (Tyler), Andrew, Nathaniel, Bennett and Ethan Miller, Abigail, Alexander and Austin Helm. Bernie was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Jean Irene (Halbeisen) Leite on April 7, 2022; grandson, Zachary Franczek; and siblings, Dr. Richard Leite, Mary Droll, Robert Leite, Edward Leite and Barbara Burns.

Bernie was born on September 24, 1935, in Fremont, Ohio, to Carl and Marie (Dolweck) Leite and was a graduate of St. Joseph High School in Fremont. Bernard was a 1959 graduate of The Ohio State University and he held a professional Engineering license. His career with the City of Toledo spanned 35 years and he retired in 1995 as the Director of Public Services for the city. He was a longtime member of Little Flower Catholic Church.

Bernie and Jean were avid Ohio State fans who held season football tickets for decades and enjoyed traveling near and far supporting the Buckeyes, including countless bowl games and two National Championship games.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, August 25, 2022, at 11:00 a.m.at Little Flower Catholic Church, 5522 Dorr St., Toledo, OH. Family and friends are welcome to gather beginning at 10:00 a.m. at Little Flower Church prior to the Mass. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.

Memorial donations are encouraged to Elara Hospice or the Scholarship Fund at St. John's Jesuit High School and Academy in lieu of flowers.
