Carol L. Wiener, born on December 16, 1944 to Marie (Davis) and Martin Wiener. She grew ups on Howard Farms with her grandparents, Herman and Carrie Wiener, before moving to New York City with her mother and her brother Stephen. In the early 1950's the family moved to Teaneck, N.J.. Carol went to American University in Washington, D.C. where she developed a love for the Democratic Party. She was named the Outstanding Senior Woman at American University, and Bobby Kennedy came on campus to give her the award. Carol worked in Bobby Kennedy's office while in school and continued to work for him during his run for President. Carol then returned to Toledo to teach Political Science at the University of Toledo and she led the Ohio petition for voting at age 18, which became the election law for Ohio. She went to work for John Gilligan when he ran for Governor and became his appointment secretary when he was governor. Carol then returned to Toledo and opened At Last, a new design for large sized women, with Marsha Miller Krowitz. She developed a passion for tennis and opened a tennis shop at the Courts of Sylvania which led to her management of the club. J.D. convinced Carol to move to Shadow Valley Tennis Club to become manager. Carol eventually became a partner and part owner of the club. She helped in running a charitable tennis exhibition where pro's would play Toledo amateurs to benefit the "Make-A-Wish" Foundation. Her favorite pro was Jimmy Connors and Carol's favorite possession was a photograph of her and Jimmy together. Carol also arranged for many years to have the Midwest 18 and under tennis tournament to come to Toledo.
Carol's closest friend for 40 years was Pam Jackson. They were like sisters, sharing birthdays, holidays and traveling together. Carol hired Jen Walton to be the new manager at Shadow Hills, eventually becoming close friends. Jen and Pam were with Carol during her last months. Carol passed away peacefully at Hospice of NW Ohio on August 20, 2024 at the age 0f 79.
Surviving is her brother, Stephen and his wife Gail, nephew Andy and niece Robin, grand nephews Jonah and Benji and grand nieces Kaya and Zoey.
The funeral will be held on Friday August 23, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at The Temple Shomer Emunim 6453 W. Sylvania Ave. Sylvania, OH. Interment will follow at Toledo Memorial Park. Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of NW Ohio or a charity of the donors choice.
