Carol Lynn McClure Kirshner of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on Friday, November 24th, 2023. The cause of her death was cancer. She was 78 years old.
Carol, or Chana as she preferred to be called, was born on December 18, 1944, in New Castle, Pennsylvania. The family believes this fact is the reason for her life-long passion for Penn State University. She was the first-born child of Phillard McClure and Marjorie Moore McClure.
Carol was raised in Toledo, Ohio and graduated from Rogers High School in 1963. After a brief time attending the University of Toledo (TU), she married Douglas Parrish of Perrysburg, Ohio, with whom she had three children, Charlene, Anthony and Steven. Doug preceded her in death in 2005. While Carol stayed at home to care for her family, she became extremely active in local theater groups and played or starred in several musical theater performances. She studied dance beginning at age five and quickly became accomplished at ballet, tap, and jazz, she had an innate affinity and love for dance that seemed to guide her steps. She became a certified lifeguard at the YMCA, eventually, every child in the extended family learned to swim. Carol adored opera, and for a number of years she worked with the Director of the Toledo Opera.
A move to the East Coast landed Carol in New York City where she eventually married the love of her life, Geoffrey Kirshner. During this period of her life, she worked as an office manager at Arthur Andersen. Both Geoffrey and Carol relished their time in NYC and Brooklyn and adored the rich variety of music and culture available to them.
Carol loved all dogs and owned several of them throughout her life. Her favorite breed was the Standard Poodle. The sight of her driving along with the poodle's head out the back window, enjoying the ride, was something to see.
One of the most important and influential periods of Chana's life was the three years that she lived in Israel and became an Israeli citizen. She studied Hebrew, worked with the Women in Green and lived daily life as an Israeli. Upon her return to this country, her Shabbat dinners were something she treasured sharing with family and friends.
Chana was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Timothy McClure; and her son, Tony, who passed in August of this year.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Geoffrey Kirshner; her daughter, Charlene Parrish (Mara Gottlieb); her son, Steven Parrish; a sister, Michele McClure Alexander; a brother, Jeffrey McClure (Mary Banneker); her daughter-in-law, Margie Parrish; three grandsons, Anthony, Jake and Zack; three granddaughters, Jessie, Jenny and Julie; and three great-grandchildren, Eli, Iris, and Isaiah; along with several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Chana will take place on Sunday, November 26, at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel of the Beth Shalom Cemetery. The address of the cemetery is 420 Otter Creek Road, Oregon, Ohio, 43616. All friends and family are welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to Michigan Standard Poodle Rescue, or to the Wounded Warriors Project.
The family is extraordinarily grateful to the staff at The Lakes of Sylvania, as well as to the staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their care, concern, and assistance in helping Carol through her difficult final days. These people were a comfort to all.
