Charles (Chuck) B. Helburn, Jr. 1941- 2021 of Toledo, OH and Newton, MA passed away on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at Kingston of Sylvania, following a major surgery and stroke.
The only child of Charles B. Sr. and Jeanette (Kahnweiler) Helburn, he was born and raised in Toledo, OH, where he graduated from Rogers High School. He attended Miami University in Oxford, OH and Chuck was a proud alumnus for the rest of his life. He went on to earn a masters degree in education at the University of Toledo. Chuck worked as a teacher and a guidance counselor in the Toledo Public Schools for over 30 years.
Survived by his wife, Helene (Stein) Helburn, they would have celebrated their 56th wedding anniversary this summer. Chuck and Helene loved to travel and were fortunate to visit several countries and learn about many cultures in their retirement. They were members of Shomer Emunim (The Temple). Chuck served on the board of the Neighborhood Health Center, volunteered at the Sight Center of Northwest Ohio, and delivered Mobile Meals for several years. Chuck was very social and had dozens of good friends. In the past decade, this included new friends in Newton, MA. He was a 'member' of the infamous ROMEO lunch group in Toledo. He loved to talk with people and made friends everywhere he went.
He was a voracious reader of mysteries and crime stories, and followed the news closely. He loved music and had a great sense of humor. In recent years, Chuck enjoyed many family get-togethers, laughing and talking while sitting on a screened porch, a lanai or by a campfire. Chuck could always be counted on to do the dishes after dinner. Chuck was a long-distance walker, and it was in a valiant effort to maintain his mobility that he underwent surgery.
He is also survived by his daughters, Jennifer of Washington, DC and Amy (Phil Mente) of Boston; and his grandson, Nicholas Charles; as well as his sister-in-law, Judy (Gordon) Hirsch of Toledo; and niece, Sara (Brian) Novak of Cleveland; and his first cousin, Alan (Maureen) Grinsfelder of Fort Wayne, IN. Graveside services will be held for the immediate family. The service may be viewed via livestream at wickfh.com
