David H. Weinberg

David Weinberg, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away on November 3, 2025, at the age of 80.
Born and raised in Queens, New York City, David graduated from City College and earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He met his beloved wife, Judy, at Camp Ramah, where they were both counselors. They were married for 57 years.
David was Professor Emeritus at Bowling Green State University, where he taught European history for 25 years. From 1993 through 2013, he served as Director of the Cohn-Haddow Center for Judaic Studies and as Professor of History at Wayne State University. During his distinguished academic career, he authored three books as well as numerous scholarly articles and book reviews. He spoke French and Hebrew fluently and guest lectured around the world.
David was deeply committed to Judaism and to Congregation B’nai Israel. In retirement, he devoted himself to all aspects of Jewish life, finding his greatest joy in sharing his love of Judaism with his grandchildren.
David is preceded in death by his parents Ann and Louis Weinberg. He leaves his wife, Judy Weinberg; son Josh Weinberg and daughter Rachel (David) Chernow; sister Rita Tesler and sister-in-law Debrorah Washofsky; grandchildren Hannah and Sophia Chernow; niece Judith (Frank) Milia and great niece Celeste.
The funeral service will be held Wednesday, November 5 at 10:30 a.m. at Congregation B’nai Israel, 6525 W. Sylvania, Sylvania, Ohio. The service will be followed by interment at Beth Shalom Cemetery in Oregon, Ohio. The family will sit shiva from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday evenings at the home of daughter and son-in-law Rachel and David Chernow.
The family would like to express their gratitude for the exceptional care provided by the staffs of the Toledo Hospital ICU and Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
