James (Jim) E. Green, 90, formerly of Toledo and Vermilion, Ohio, passed away on March 30, 2026 at Lakes of Monclova, Maumee. Jim was born on March 16, 1936 to Alva and Loretta (Sauers) Green. After graduating from Macomber High School, he worked various jobs before hiring on with New York Central Railroad. There, he worked as a conductor and brakeman. Jim retired in 1998 after 43 years of service with New York Central, then Penn Central, then Conrail. On June 22, 1957, Jim married the love of his life, Velma E. Johnson. They were happily married for 66 years.
He enjoyed the outdoors, especially gardening. Jim was an avid card player, liked to do woodworking, and took great pleasure in following his grandchildren’s activities. James was a man of deep faith, in accordance with his Catholic upbringing.
Surviving are Jim’s children, Debbi (Chris) Baker of Overland Park, KS, Ken (Tammie) Green of North Canton, OH, and Terry (Michelle) Green of Holly Springs, NC, eight grandchildren, Todd (Sonia) Baker, Toni Baker, Sean (Nicole) Green, Erin (Craig) Gaston, Marc (Vanessa) Green, Devan (Devin) Hazzard, Trajen Green and Dagny Green. Also surviving are 11 great-grandchildren, and sister Susie (Jim) Davis in Columbia City, IN. The family extends a sincere, special thank you to Kathleen Mick and Barb Clark for their visits with Jim.
James is preceded in death by his parents, wife, Velma, and brother Tom Green. Also seven sisters have passed, Mary (Bob) Miller, Carolyn (Bob) Clark, Elizabeth Gozdowski, Patricia (John) McIntosh, Margaret (Ernie) Popp, Donna Cummings, and Dorothy Scott.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday April 9, at 10:30 a.m. with visitation an hour before at the Thos. I Wisniewski Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio and Little Flower Catholic Church.
