James E. Tierney

Professor James E. "Jim" Tierney, of Sylvania, Ohio, passed away on February 6, 2023. He was 66 years old.

Jim is survived by his sister, Diane Tierney; his niece, Jennifer Camp of Martinez, CA; his uncle, Michael Tierney of St. Louis, MO; and many cousins.

Jim grew up in Cheesequake, NJ. He graduated from Rutgers College with High Honors and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He attended New York University School of Law School where he earned Juris Doctor (JD) and Master of Laws in Taxation (LLM) degrees. Jim was employed with Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt and Mosle in New York and with Steptoe and Johnson in Washington, D.C. One of the highlights of his career was to serve as a law clerk for the Honorable William M. Fay of the United States Tax Court.

In 1988 Jim joined the faculty at the University of Toledo Law School where he was a Professor of Law for 25 years, specializing in contract and taxation law. He was honored with the Outstanding Professor Award in 2005.

Jim enjoyed sailing, golfing, playing the piano, organ and guitar and studying foreign languages. He spoke French fluently, having studied in Tours, France. He was proud of his Irish heritage and traveled extensively in Ireland. Jim often spent summers in the San Francisco Bay Area visiting his family.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 16, 2023, at Little Flower Catholic Church, 5522 Dorr St., Toledo. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation, Inc. (OI Foundation) or Little Flower Catholic Church. Arrangements by the Thos. I.
