Joseph Goldberg Obituary


Joseph Goldberg, of Fort Myers, Florida died on April 1, 2024 at the age of 89. He was born in Toledo on November 19, 1934, attended Sherman Elementary School and graduated in 1952 from Scott High School. Ever loyal to the Scott Bulldogs, he chaired the 1952 alumni class reunions every five years from 1962 to 2012.

After high school he took business classes at the University of Toledo for a year and then joined the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1957, serving as a yeoman on the minesweeper U.S. Redpoll and on the staff of Saclant-NATO. Returning to Toledo, he was employed as Internal Auditor/Budget Analyst at the University, and as Deputy Clerk of Courts while he attended night classes in law at the U.T. law school.

Upon graduating and receiving his J.D. degree in 1963, he was employed as a prosecutor at the Toledo Municipal Court, later serving as Assistant Counsel to the City Manager of Toledo and various administrators/departments, as well as to the Mayor and various boards and committees. In addition to employment at the City, he maintained a private law office with Roberts, Boldt and Goldberg and later with Friedman, Adler and Goldberg until his retirement in 1966.

Marriage to a fellow classmate, Marcia Rinehart, had awaited her graduation a year after his. They both mourned the death of their first born child, Michael Jay, who died in an automobile accident at the age of 24 in 1992. A second son, Jaron Stuart Goldberg, Columbus, OH survives Joe, as does Marcia, his wife of 58 years; and granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Goldberg, Columbus, OH.

Also surviving are brother, William Goldberg of Huntsville, AL and Atlanta, GA. (Dorothy Jo); sister, Delores Lustig, Sarasota, FL; nephews and nieces, David, Philip and Stephen Goldberg and Susan Goldberg Sawyer, Rochelle Lustig Armstrong and Mark Lustig.

Services and interment will be held on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in Beth Shalom Cemetery, Oregon, Ohio. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
