Joseph (Joe) James McCaffery, III passed away at the age of 76. Surrounded by his loving family, Joe succumbed to the challenges of Lewy Body Dementia on January 30, 2024. He was born on July 18, 1947, in South Bend, Indiana, to Betty Ann and Joseph James McCaffery Jr.
Joe's educational journey led him from John Adams High School in South Bend, Indiana to Indiana University, where he earned his BA in Political Science and MA in Education. While initially embarking on a career in education, Joe discovered his true calling in the steel services industry after relocating to Toledo, Ohio. In 1972, he joined his father-in-law, Lawrence Raskin, at Toledo Pickling & Steel Service, Inc. Joe continued his love for education at Bowling Green State University, where he earned a MA in Business Administration. In 1974, he founded Toledo Blank, Inc., serving as its President and CEO for almost 30 years until the sale of the company in 2003.
Joe devoted significant time to the Village of Ottawa Hills and community service projects. For over two decades, he served as a Village Councilman, passionately contributing to the development of the Mayor Youngen Art Garden. Joe also held leadership roles as President and Trustee of the Ottawa Hills Foundation and as a Trustee of the Teamsters Health and Welfare Fund. His active involvement extended to the Young President’s Organization, where he developed meaningful personal and business relationships.
Joe's love for music, art, reading, and learning defined his rich and varied interests. He was a skilled drummer with bands in high school and college, including The Younger Brothers and The Uncalled Four. He had a voracious appetite for literature, and his thirst for knowledge was evident in his profound philosophical insights. Joe also enjoyed time skiing with family and friends and playing golf, tennis, and squash.
Joe is survived by his children, Matthew McCaffery and Brooke (Markus) Rasmus, and his cherished grandchildren Sam, Alex, and Merrill McCaffery, and Mila and Lily Rasmus. He is preceded in death by his mother, Betty Ann McCaffery, and father, Joseph James McCaffery, Jr. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care provided by the nurses and caregivers at Otterbein Sunset House and the amazing services and care provided by Hospice of Northwest Ohio. In addition, the family would like to thank those who supported and loved Joe during his life, especially his Cousin Jim Ward who played the role as cousin, friend, and brother.
A private memorial will be held for family and friends. There will be a celebration of life at Sylvania Country Club, 5201 Corey Rd., Sylvania, OH 43560, 3:30-6:30 pm on Friday, February 2, 2024, for those who would like to commemorate Joe’s life and visit his family.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
