Marge Franks Goldstein, retired Toledo Public School teacher and union activist, died peacefully in her sleep on January 6, 2024. She was born on July 3, 1940, to Ray and Esther (Drewicz) Franks. She was a 1958 graduate of Clay-Genoa High School. With her husbands Bill's encouragement and support, Marge returned to college after having their four children. She received her B.S. from Bowling Green State University and her M.A. from the University of Toledo.
Marge was a highly regarded special education teacher in Toledo Public Schools for thirty years, retiring in 2004. When the state of Ohio funded a Career Ladder Program in Toledo to recognize outstanding teachers, she was one of those who achieved green level status.
An elected member of the Board of Directors for the Toledo Federation of Teachers, she was also on the staff of the TFT. While her job was multifaceted, she was recognized both by TFT and the Ohio Federation of Teachers, for her expertise and involvement in special education at local, state and national levels and she represented both TFT and OFT on special education issues.
Marge served for many years on numerous Ohio Department of Education committees including the State Superintendent's Task Force for Preparing Special Education Policies and Procedures Writing Committee, and the State Superintendent's Advisory Committee, where she was the first teacher elected to chair that committee. Additionally, she was on the OFT Executive Council and chaired the OFT Nominations and Elections committee. Twice she was recognized by OFT with "Outstanding Leadership and Service" awards and, at her retirement, received recognition from the Ohio Department of Education and a State Of Ohio Senatorial Citation Award.
Her union activities extended to the AFL-CIO where she served as a delegate to the local AFL-CIO Council. She joined other members in numerous rallies and political campaigns. Her interests in politics extended beyond unions. For several terms she was elected as Precinct Committeeman to the Lucas County Democratic Party and held the office of secretary of the Central Committee for one of those terms.
Her friends would describe Marge as a people person. Instead of a handshake, Marge would always greet her friends with open arms and a memorable hug.
Marge was actively affiliated with the Congregation Temple Shomer Emunium where she was a member of Sisterhood. She also belonged to TFT Retiree Local 250R, the Titans Cluster Group, NAACP, and the Toledo Museum of Art. An avid reader, she enjoyed book clubs, Mal Jongg groups and movies.
She met her husband Bill, of 57 years, at the Toledo Rep Theatre where she acted and he worked on make up and sets. Marge and Bill Loved to travel. Together they visited all fifty United States, six Canadian Provinces, and more than thirty foreign countries.
Marge was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; and brothers, Tom and Teddy Joe Franks. She survived by her sons, Sheldon (Wendy) Goldstein, Benjamin (Dawn) Goldstein, Marshall (Jodie) Goldstein; daughter, Rochelle (Joe) Barchick; as well her brothers, Gus (Karen) Franks, Rodney (Tammy) Franks; sister-in law, Karen Franks. Her grandchildren, who she dearly loved, are Stephen and Sarah Lamb, Alex, Sam, and Esther Goldstein, Anne E and Oscar Barchick and Abigail and Noah Goldstein.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at the Temple Shomer Emunium, 6453 Sylvania Ave., at ten o'clock a.m. Marge will rest by her beloved Bill, at Eagle Point Cemetery.
The family will be sitting shiva at the Barchick residence at 5926 Porsha Drive Sylvania, OH. 43560 on Wednesday and Thursday from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m.
