Sandra Schafer Obituary

Sandra Schafer passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on June 30, 2021 at the OSU East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. She was born on August 29, 1937 in Brooklyn, New York.

Sandy and her twin sister Wilma (Miller) grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and then spent most of her adult life in Toledo, Ohio where she raised her family and was a very active community leader.

Sandy attended the University of Toledo, where she studied science and began her journey to work with senior citizens. In 1966 she started her volunteering career where she served as President of Lilal Group Hadassah. She went on to serve as President of the Darlington House auxiliary, and was the first woman President of the Board of Trustees. She was awarded the Darlington House honor of Volunteer of the year in 1999.

Sandy's love of working with seniors led her to become President of the Pelham Manor Trustees for six years. She also served as Recording Secretary of the Academy of Medicine Auxiliary, and was a longtime volunteer working with in-house patients at Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

Additionally, she was very active in Toledo area service. Several of her activities included acting as Chairman for the 125th Anniversary of Temple Shomer Emunim, acting as Co-Chairman of the Festival By the River in Downtown Toledo, and serving on the Board of Trustees for the Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo.

Sandy was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Dr. Richard Schafer, and also her parents Max and Mary Schleifer. Sandy and Richard enjoyed traveling extensively around the world, gardening and service to others. In that spirit, together they established their Cancer Fund in the Toledo Jewish Community Federation. which was created to support all Jewish individuals who are suffering with Cancer and need family and economic assistance.

Sandy is survived by her children, Edwin (Judy) Radin, Jeff (Judy M.)  Radin and Chuck Radin; her grandchildren Jacob (Kiley) Radin, Matthew (Sara) Radin, Joshua (Amy) Radin, Kyle Radin and Kristina (David) DeRoia; and her great grandchildren Joseph, Vincent, Axel, Rilynn, Jaxtyn and Margot. She was the dearest sister of Wilma Miller (Hal).
