Sister M. Madonna Marchiniak died at Rosary Care Center in Sylvania on Friday, December 30, 2016. The daughter of the late Stanley and Regina Marchiniak came to Sylvania, Ohio from Columbia Heights, Minnesota in 1955 to become a Sister of St. Francis. She made her First Profession of Vows in 1957 and her Final Vows in 1960. She would have celebrated her 60th Jubilee in June 2017. Sister Madonna began her ministry of teaching in elementary schools in Michigan and Minnesota and then taught business classes in high schools in Michigan and Ohio. She received a B.A. degree from Mercy College in Detroit, Michigan and a M.Ed. from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. She spent 22 years at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan, Texas as the Educational Coordinator. Her last eight years of ministry consisted of volunteer work in a variety of settings in the Minneapolis area. To those who knew Sister Madonna, she will be remembered as a gracious lady who loved people, who lit up a room when she entered, who at the age of 88 had a young spirit, who was a free spirit even as she battled cancer on her own terms and in her own way. She returned to the Motherhouse in Sylvania on December 13, 2016, after being lovingly cared for by her housemates in Minneapolis. Sister Madonna will be dearly missed by her Sisters in community; her sister, Stella Peltier; brothers, Ted (Muriel) and John (Florence) Marchiniak; many nieces and nephews as well many good friends from Bryan, Texas.
