William R. "Bill" Treuhaft Obituary

William R. Treuhaft

On Saturday, October 2, 2021, William "Bill" R. Treuhaft, 88, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends. Mr. Treuhaft, along with his older brother, Jack, Jr. were the last proprietors of Treuhaft Brother's Furniture, a family business started by their father Jack, Sr., and his three brothers and which operated from 1918, when it opened in the Old West End until 1982, when the W. Central Avenue location between the old Westgate shopping center and Cricket West closed. Subsequent to the closing of Treuhaft Brother's, Mr. Treuhaft worked as a salesman for Rogers, Samsen's and La-Z-Boy, before retiring in the March 2016.

A 1950 Graduate of Scott High School, the young Billy Treuhaft then went to The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, where he lettered as manager of the baseball and fencing teams. While at OSU, Bill met life-long friends David A. Katz and with his soon to be spouse, Joan Siegel (Katz), and through whom he met his wife, June Klein (Treuhaft).

Upon graduation from Ohio State with a degree in business administration, Mr. Treuhaft then served in the Air Force, from which he retired at the rank of Captain. After completing his active duty commitment, he returned to Toledo, joining his father and brother to run Treuhaft's Furniture, assisting in the construction of the 3205 W. Central location, and the transition from the Old West End store. He also became active in the Collingwood Avenue Temple, serving as an usher and board member, prior to the Temple Shomer Enumim's congregation's move to its present location in Sylvania, Ohio.

An avid golfer, Mr. Treuhaft got his first hole-in one at the age of 13. He was proud to serve as a Marshall and also as a Captain when the Inverness Club last hosted the U.S. Open and PGA Championships, and counted the 2 times he attended the Masters tournament with his daughter as being among his fondest memories. He was known to enjoy popcorn, hugs, golf, and The great British Baking Show; although, not necessarily in that order.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Lois Steinberg; brother-in-law, Don Steinberg; sister, Suzanne T. Cohn and brother-in-law, Allen Cohn; and his brother, Jack J. Treuhaft.

Mr. Treuhaft is survived by his wife of 65 years, June K. Treuhaft; his son, Joel Treuhaft (and daughter-in-law, Linda); his daughter, Beth Treuhaft; and his grandson, Landen Treuhaft. His sister-in-law Barbara R. Treuhaft as well as by many nieces and nephews also survive. Services will be held at Temple Shomer Emunim on Tuesday, October 5th at 5 p.m. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Jewish Federation of Greater Toledo Ross Treuhaft Special Needs Spirituality Fund or the Cameron Morgan Steinberg Fund at http://victors.us/steinberg21
